Do I need rhinoplasty?

In general, having cosmetic surgeries depend on your opinion and taste. Do not go for cosmetic surgery just because of others insisting on it if you don’t like it.

Appropriate time for rhinoplasty

Scientifically, rhinoplasty can be performed once your bone completed their growth stage (13 full years of age for women and 14 full years of age for men). However, based on my experiences, I recommend that you should do it when you are 16 or older.

Important points to note when making decision about rhinoplasty

Firstly, photos of the nose taken from different angles should be examined, as some problems in the nose shape are only visible from a particular angle. It is very important to compare the shape and size of the nose with other parts of the face, particularly the chin and cheeks. Smaller chin or cheeks may make your nose look bigger. Before the surgery, you should be able to imagine how your nose would look like after the surgery. This can help you in making decision. You can perform a simple analysis of your nose and identify the part(s) that should change by reading “Aesthetical Assessment of the Nose”. Ask your doctor to show you a post-surgery image of your nose using available software. Although this image does not guarantee the shape of your nose after the surgery, it gives you a rough picture of how your nose will look like. If such software is not available, you can refer to pre and post-surgery photos taken from people whose noses look like yours.

Postoperative care

Follow-up or postoperative care is just as important as the surgery itself in terms of the results of the surgery. So, you should closely follow the points noted below.

  1. As long as you have dressing on your nose, change the dressing when necessary (replacing a dirty one with a clean one)
  2. Use cold compression or ice pack around your nose and under your eyes for 72 hours.
  3. Do not position your body at a completely horizontal situation for 72 hours. When sleeping, place your head at a slightly higher position than your body.
  4. While some doctors recommend certain foods after surgery, in my opinion drinking celery juice or eating pineapple or other foods is not that effective in removing bruises around your nose. So do not bother if you just don’t like these foods.
  5. Do not blow your nose too hard. Use saline solution to wash your nose at least 4 times a day. Proper rinsing not only removes nasal congestions, but also reduces pain and swellings caused by mucus. So, if you feel pain, that’s a good sign telling you that you should wash your nose.
  6. Splints are often removed within one week. Before seeing your doctor for removal of splint, please take a bath and thoroughly wash your head and face. It is ok, and even hygienically recommended, to take bath while you have a splint on. Do not worry if it comes loose. In this case just see your doctor. This usually has no impact on the final results.
  7. Do not chew (for example gum) for a long time. There are no other restrictions on the food you eat.
  8. Avoid excessive physical activity (e.g. exercise, sex, etc.) and lower the level of your physical activity for the first three days following the surgery.
  9. Brush your teeth slowly and do not touch your lips.
  10. Avoid too much speaking, long phone calls, and excessive social activities during the two weeks immediately following the surgery.
  11. Do not go swimming for a month.
  12. Avoid long exposure to heat or sunlight. Heat will make swelling stay for a longer period of time.
  13. Bruises and swollen spots will be observed around your nose and eyes once the splint is removed. Don’t worry about this as they will be gone within two to three weeks. Sometimes it takes 6 months to completely get rid of the swelling on your nose. Swelling on the nose tip usually stays for a longer time.
  14. Use your medications on time and do not discontinue using them without asking your doctor about it.
  15. Do not wear glasses for a month. If you need glasses, you can tape them onto your forehead.
  16. It is ok to wear lenses.
  17. You can use cosmetics but not on the sutured area. Protect your nose from any pressure or strike.
  18. Wash the sutured area using soap and water 3 to 4 times a day. Do not use betadine. Keeping the sutured area clean is highly effective in quick healing of the wound and removing the traces of sutures.
